Liverpool lab firm donates equipment to schools

Liverpool laboratory venture BioGrad donates ยฃ65,000 worth of โ€˜industry-gradeโ€™ laboratory equipment to schools, benefiting more than 9,500 students. Tony McDonough reports

Liverpool laboratory venture BioGrad has demonstrated its commitment to promote careers in the life sciences sector by donating โ€˜industry-gradeโ€™ lab equipment to schools.

Worth a total of ยฃ65,000 this equipment will benefit more than 9,500 students aged 11 to 19 across Southport and surrounding areas. BioGrad founder and chief executive Dr Natalie Kenny is keen to promote careers in the life sciences sector.

She has partnered with Novacyt, Southport Learning Trust, and Southport Education Group on this latest project. BioGrad is also providing free training for science teachers and lab technicians across participating schools.ย 

And building on its mission to widen access to healthcare and education, BioGrad is offering fully funded scholarships on its Duke of Edinburgh-approved clinical and laboratory training courses for local students aged 16 to 19.

In addition, BioGrad has partnered with the UKโ€™s largest liquid medicine manufacturer, based in Southport, to upskill 130 individuals through the government-supported Skills Bootcamp scheme.

Backed by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, this initiative will further boost the regionโ€™s growing life sciences ecosystem and provide much-needed employment pathways in the sector.

Dr Kenny said: โ€œAs the UK works toward becoming a global science and technology superpower by 2030, itโ€™s vital that we begin by equipping and inspiring our young people.

โ€œEngaging them from an early age is crucial, not just for the future of the life sciences sector, but for the future of our communities. Our goal at BioGrad is to make science accessible, exciting, and inclusive for every student, no matter their background.

โ€œAs someone proud to call Southport home, it means a lot to be playing a part in growing the life sciences sector, both across the Liverpool city region and on my doorstep.โ€
